Five respondents agreed to be interviewed and audio taped for the study and were given pseudonyms for the study.
37 years old, Caucasian, Catholic, lost her mother while incarcerated. Incarcerated for parole violation and possession of controlled dangerous substance (CDS)/Heroin.

50 years old, African American, Baptist, lost her grandmother, step-father, and father while incarcerated. Incarcerated for possession of controlled dangerous substance (CDS/Heroin).
51 years old, Hispanic, Catholic, lost her sister while incarcerated. Incarcerated for possession of controlled dangerous substance (CDS)/Heroin.
28 years old, Hispanic, Spiritual, lost her ex-boyfriend, a close friend, and while incarcerated befriended another inmate who committed suicide. Incarcerated for possession/distribution of controlled dangerous substance (CDS).
47 years old, African American, Christian/Baptist, lost her grandmother while incarcerated. Did not disclose charges.
