Reentry, Grief and Loss: Addressing Unmet Mental Health Needs of Incarcerated Women

Assess for grief and loss  during

 intake and assessment.

 If feasible, implement a peer-led grief and loss support group.

​

Assess for grief and loss during discharge planning including transfers to assessment centers and RCRP.

​

Review mental health policies and criteria for restrictive housing upon notification of the loss of a significant other or loved one. 

Implement policies to address notification of loss through social services department when applicable.

Review current mental health referral polices to expedite services and decrease the wait time to speak to a mental health counselor.

Allow for additional phone time through the social service department and/or the facility's phone system upon verification of the loss of a significant other or loved one.

Staff training and development on grief and loss, Trauma-Informed Care, and

Anti-Oppressive Practices.
